THE WORLD OF CHERUB
Gary Lindsay-Moore’s work rarely stays in one place for very long.
Photographer, artist, model, author and actor, his practice moves between portraiture, body positivity, fetish, performance, constructed imagery & what Gary describes as Beautiful Chaos.
The World of Cherub is one of those worlds.
Originally centred around male body positivity & challenging conventional ideas of beauty, Cherub sits amongst a much larger collection of projects exploring bodies, identity, sexuality, transformation & the freedom to construct yourself however you choose.
& the boundaries between them aren’t particularly tidy.
In our recorded conversation for Post No Bills, Gary talks about The World of Cherub alongside other projects & ideas. Stories overlap. Images collide. Something from one project suddenly makes sense somewhere completely different.
We decided not to simply reproduce the original Cherub imagery.
Instead, the conversation became the starting point for something new.
A new cherub was created, dragged into the world of Post No Bills & interfered with.
Its eyes got scratched out.
SATAN LOVES SLAGS.
Elsewhere, Gary has been sending us photographs of his decorated mannequin works — jewels, nipple tassels, bodies & the word SLAG — work which, beneath an apparently female visual language, moves into questions around trans identity & the construction of gender.
Different project. Same word. Another connection.
Perhaps that’s the interesting bit.
Post No Bills isn’t an attempt to catalogue Gary’s work or put the past behind glass. It’s a place where fragments of that work can meet photography, clothing, objects, other artists & new technologies — and become something else.
The archive isn’t being preserved. It’s being put back to work.
World of Cherub, misremembered.
Gary has modelled for us for years. More recently we met up to photograph some of the work he’s been making & record a conversation. We talked almost continuously for three hours.
There wasn’t much interest in keeping things in separate boxes. One project wandered into another; old photographs led to new work, Cherub collided with decorated mannequins, bodies, clothing, identity & whatever happened to come up next.
Some of those conversations have subsequently become images & objects for Post No Bills.
The conversation became part of the work.
