Strangely is an independent London clothing label producing original garments, hats & accessories through small-scale & made-to-order production.
Based in London, Strangely combines pattern cutting, tailoring, screen printing, unusual textiles & hand-finishing to create clothing outside conventional seasonal fashion.
The label encompasses several related strands of work, including 430 & Slum Gentry / SQUALERÉ 167, each with its own visual language but sharing the same approach to construction, experimentation & limited production.
Clothing Rather Than Collections
Strangely does not operate around the conventional fashion cycle.
Pieces develop through making: patterns are cut and altered, proportions exaggerated, fabrics printed, details changed & mistakes occasionally retained because they produce something more interesting than the original intention.
A garment may subsequently evolve rather than simply disappear at the end of a season.
This means many Strangely products are produced in relatively small quantities. Some are available immediately, while others are made after an order is received.
Made to Order Is Not the Same as Bespoke
There is an important distinction between our standard made-to-order clothing & bespoke work.
A standard Strangely garment may be produced after you place your order rather than being taken from a warehouse shelf. The design, size & specification remain part of our normal catalogue.
Bespoke and customised pieces are different. These may involve individual measurements, alterations to an existing pattern, different proportions, selected materials or other changes made specifically for the customer.
Typical production time for standard made-to-order clothing is approximately two weeks, while more complex or bespoke work may take approximately four weeks.
Made in London
Much of the development and production takes place directly in London.
Patterns are drafted & modified in the studio. Garments are cut and constructed in small quantities, & screen printing allows artwork to become part of the fabric & construction rather than simply decoration applied to a finished product.
This way of working also allows designs to change quickly. We can experiment with a print, alter a pattern, make another sample & decide whether the result deserves to become a product.
It is closer to a workshop than a conventional clothing supply chain.
430
430 takes its name from 430 King’s Road, London, an address inseparable from the history of World’s End & several generations of British independent fashion & subculture.
430 is not intended as a reproduction of that history.
It uses knowledge of British clothing, punk, post-punk & the King’s Road as raw material for new work: familiar references can be altered, reconstructed, printed over or taken somewhere else entirely.
The emphasis is on continuing to make things rather than reproducing a museum version of what has already happened.
Slum Gentry / SQUALERÉ 167
Slum Gentry, also identified as SQUALERÉ 167, explores a different side of the same practice.
Its imagery & clothing draw on London’s rookeries, social geography, maps, street culture & deliberately awkward forms of tailoring.
Print, mismatched fabric, exposed construction, unusual proportions & custom details become part of the garment rather than additions to it.
Materials and Construction
Materials are selected according to what a particular piece needs rather than according to a fixed seasonal palette.
These can include Irish linen, cotton poplin, Khadi, striped workwear fabrics, jersey, specialist tailoring materials & limited fabrics sourced from small mills & suppliers.
Buttons, buckles, prints & other details may be designed or produced specifically for an individual garment.
Some pieces incorporate screen printing, hand finishing, distressing or other processes that naturally create slight differences between individual examples. These variations are part of the character of small-scale production.
