CLINT 430 — A Jacket in Progress

The CLINT 430 started with the familiar shape of a bomber jacket & a question: how far can you move something on before it becomes something else?

The starting point is somewhere between a military jacket & Clint Eastwood, but not preserved in aspic. An oversized asymmetric collar was taken from a shirt pattern already being developed in the studio & transplanted onto the jacket.

The shirt & jacket are intended to be worn together, allowing the same construction to appear in layers & at different scales. A bondage version of the shirt is also being developed, with straps around the arms & colour-matched buckles & buttons.

CLINT 430 will be made in wool/cotton & brocade taffeta plaids, with heavy brown rib & a chunky brown RiRi zip. The taffeta isn’t supposed to behave politely. The cloth will fight the rib, stick out, buckle & define its own shape — somewhere between military clothing, cowboy swagger & the structure of a catwalk ball gown.

No interfacing is planned for the first taffeta sample. A further version will introduce boning & push the construction somewhere more extreme.

The pattern is currently around 80% complete. The photographs & video were made while working on it at the pattern-cutting table at the Gramophone Works in Portobello — sketches printed, drawn over, altered & printed again as the garment develops.

The finished CLINT 430 digital pattern will also be available to download.

Sketch. Cloth. Pattern. Garment. Then move it on again.
